Summary:
Experimental Study of the Perichondrial proliferative capacity using free perichondrial
grafts in the inmature rabbit.
A full thickness chondral defect was surgically created in the· rabbit's ear. The perichondrial
graft was sutured bigding the gap, and new chondrocytes were seen after 3-6-12 weeks.
The perichondrial origin of the new chondrocytes was proven using Feulgen stain in
combination with the cytophometric method.
We therefore suggest that the graft undergoes revascularization, then the fibroblasts
proliferate, forming several Iayers of chondrocytes, which, in their turn, go on increasing
the cartilage thickness by intersticial growth.
